EVERY household in the country will be hit with a new Public Service Broadcasting Charge

Another Rabbit pulled out of  Pat Rabbitte,s hat!

“Every household in the country will be hit with a new Public Service Broadcasting Charge”

Nobody will be able to refuse to pay the charge because it will apply regardless of whether you have a television, computer or any other device that can pick up public information.

The new universal charge will be collected in a way that tackles the current very high evasion rates of the TV licence fee – suggesting the payment mechanism could be modelled on the new property tax.

Currently nearly one in five households does not pay the TV licence fee and this is costing the government €30m a year in lost revenue.

Announcing major changes to the way public service broadcasting is funded Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte today gave a commitment the new charge will not exceed the current €160 a year licence fee………….

Government denies facilitating Apple tax avoidance

By Simon Carswell, Suzanne Lynch

The Government has denied claims in a US senate report that Ireland’s tax regime has allowed Apple to avoid paying billions of dollars in tax.

Speaking in Brussels this morning, Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore said that Ireland has a “very transparent tax regime.”

The issues raised in the US Senate report, including the claim that Apple used two Irish subsidiaries which are not tax-resident anywhere, are “not issues that arise from the Irish taxation system,” he said

“They’re issues that arise from the taxation system in other jurisdictions and that’s an issue that has to be addressed first of all in those jurisdictions.”

Mr Gilmore said that while the Government will look at the report, Ireland has a very transparent tax regime.

“Let’s be very clear about this, Ireland has a very strong, very transparent tax regime. There are problems in other jurisdictions, those problems are going to have to be addressed.

“Any loopholes have to be closed off, and we will work to have those closed off both at European Union level and through the work we are doing at the OECD.”…

BUDGET: Gilmore has hung ordinary workers out to dry

“LABOUR is the party of work.” That was one of Eamon Gilmore’s mantras in last year’s General Election as he tried to convince voters that he was the man to fix our unemployment crisis.

Today the Tanaiste might want to consider giving his organisation a change of name — because this is a Budget that savages the ordinary worker and will leave more people in danger of getting ensnared in a poverty trap.

Labour’s proudest boast is that it managed to protect the core weekly pay rates for social welfare recipients.

When you look at what they had to sacrifice instead, however, this looks like a pretty hollow victory. The junior coalition partners apparently had no great problem with the PRSI increases that will cost every single worker above the minimum wage an extra €264 — no matter whether they are earning €20,000 or €20m a year………………………………

Feeble defense for tax arbitrage

By
“Ireland’s corporation tax rate was in the sights of the man most likely to succeed Angela Merkel as German chancellor when he met Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore in Berlin. Peer Steinbruck, the Socialists’ candidate to lead the party in next year’s election, also said he doesn’t personally believe in using EU funds to pay down bank debt.”

Now, here’s the problem: Steinbruck has been “deeply critical of Ireland’s generous corporation tax, blaming it for Germany losing income from German companies, when he was finance minister in the previous coalition government with Ms Merkel.”

Per report, “the Tánaiste tried to reassure him that Ireland’s tax rate of 12.5% — the second lowest in the EU — posed no threat to Germany… …

Enda praying that walking on eggshells will do trick

By David Mc Williams

THIS is Enda’s eggshell referendum. For the Taoiseach knows all too well that there are few political minefields more lethal to the longevity of a government than a constitutional referendum and anything to do with children or family.

And so there was never any doubt that the wording of the Children’s Referendum would be meticulously picked over by legal-eagles for loopholes or for any hint of hubris before being unveiled — there couldn’t be the slightest suggestion that this was a charter for social-worker shock-troops to be able to snatch howling infants from their anguished mothers.

Lord knows, there are enough citizens cheesed off with the Government already, what with health cuts and household charges, without enraging a whole new swathe of voters by portraying themselves as something akin to the Child Catcher from ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’.

Finally the wording was ready for release yesterday (though its moniker 42A sounds more like a bus than an amendment).

Enda, Eamon Gilmore and Children’s Minister Frances Fitzgerald all trooped into the press centre in Government Buildings before noon. The trio were at pains to emphasise the importance of the referendum……………………….

Oh Eamon, how power changed you…

Oh Eamon, how power changed you…

How many U-turns does it take to make a hypocrite?

That is the awkward  question tormenting Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore after a  thundering leaflet from his Democratic Left days emerged denouncing those twin  evils — water charges and property taxes.
“How Many Councillors Does It  Take To Turn Off The Water Tax?” the 1994 missive demanded to know before  helpfully providing the answer that it just took Outraged Eamon and 14 others to  sink the tap tax.
And who could argue with Gilmore’s logic that “water  charges are another tax on workers on top of PAYE, PRSI and levies”.

Protesters picket Labour conference

Hundreds of angry protesters have stormed Garda barricades at a Labour Party  conference.

Crowds of placard-waving campaigners broke through security lines to picket  the Bailey Allen building at NUI Galway, where the coalition party was holding  its annual party meeting.

The mob used a coffin draped in the Irish flag as a battering ram, chanting:  “They say cut back, we say fight back.”

There were reports of Gardai using pepper spray to hold the crowd back.

One 13-year-old protester from Ballymun said he was threatened with the  spray. “I’m here because I want to fight for my future,” said the young  protester. “I want to be able to go to college, but Eamon Gilmore won’t let that  happen.”

then we get this news

MINISTER FOR the Environment Phil Hogan last night reiterated that the Government was determined to pursue all householders over payment of the €100 household charge and confirmed that local authorities would have a central role in pursuing those who had not paid to date for arrears and penalties.

Mr Hogan said more than 900,000 people had registered for the charge, and thanked those who had signed up to pay.

He added that, over the coming weeks, data protocols would be put in place to allow the Local Government Management Agency to draw up a comprehensive database.

Mr Hogan said the data protocols would allow the agency to contact State utility providers as well as the Land Registry and the Property Management Act to enable a thorough cross-checking to take place of those who had registered and paid to date and those who had failed to register.

The details will then be forwarded to the local authorities and notifications will be sent out to those who have yet to pay, reminding them of their obligation to pay in the same way as people are notified of their requirement to pay the charge for their TV licence, he said.
