ICTU accuses Govt of ‘failing’ unemployed
Saturday, 1 May 2010 11:15
The Irish Congress of Trade Unions has accused the Government of ignoring the jobs crisis, and failing the 435,000 people currently out of work.
In a May Day statement, ICTU General Secretary David Begg said Government inaction had ensured that long-term unemployment and emigration were central features of Irish life again.
Mr Begg said the entire apparatus of Government seemed ‘uttery transfixed’ by the banking crisis, while those who had lost their jobs had seen their benefits cut.
‘There appears to be a bottomless pit for the senior bankers that caused this mess – and the jobless are told to wait in line, literally,’ he said.
‘For there to be any sense of justice or of a burden being shared, Government must move with urgency to give the Jobs Crisis equal billing with the banking crisis,’ he added
First you should get your figures right the total number of unemployed is not 435,000
You just took this number from the government’s doctored figures!
The real figures is more like 650,000 people plus 120,000 on useless FAS courses,
Of which when finished will only dump these unfortunate people back on to the Dole queues!
The Government figures do not give the up to date numbers. They do not count people who are unemployed but do not receive the jobseekers allowance. In other words if you are in receipt of some other payment you are not included in the Dole stats,
You are not in the same stats if you were self-employed and are now unemployed (Like me)
There are approximately 65 thousand of such persons, that’s without counting the already 65,000 that have left the country
Then we come to the “Students” that are now back to education (Mature) approx 27,000 in all not to mention the 53,000 that will be available for work and have no jobs to go to when they finish at the end of may (this school year)
Where have you and your Unions concern for the Unemployed been all this time (the last two years)
While the government have been dumping billions into the bankrupt toxic banks you and the other unions in this state have been more concerned with your own union members pay while the unemployed have had to undergo in some cases a 50% deduction
The once self employed (approx 65 thousand people) have been just dumped on to the scrapheap
With no entitlements of any kind given to them!
I belong to this group and after 27 years of paying my taxes and prsi and the levies for myself and my staff (up to 8 persons) I too have found myself without any support of any kind.
Where was your concern when we needed it?
Your expression of concern for the unemployed ring hallow to all 565,000 thousand of us
your outburst smacks of self interests!
we need Jobs not waffle!
Unemployed unite and take to the streets !
