“Deep divisions” are opening up in Irish society and attempts are being made to drive a wedge between public sector and private sector workers, Eamon Gilmore told the annual conference of Labour Youth in the Mansion House Dublin last night.
He said Friday’s huge turnout of both public and private sector workers at the Irish Congress of Trade Union’s (Ictu) national day of protest showed “workers are not going to lie down and meekly accept being singled out by Fianna Fáil and the Greens”.
“The Government is saying that the €4billion that needs to be found in this budget must be achieved by targeting those on social welfare; those who work in the public service; and those who are dependent on public services.

Mr Gilmore, it surprises me to think that you did not anticipated this strategy from the Government and its media cronies, but what is more surprising is that you stated on TV last week to David Williams that if NAMA was passed you in a future Government would not change anything with NAMA
This has to be the shock of the year for me and thousands of others that thought you could be the obvious choice to replace Brian Cowen!
It is now not as clear to me if I should vote for Labour.
In light of this revelation, I call upon you now to demand an immediate General election.
You can stop NAMA from ever happening then,
(That is if you are really determent to stop it)
We the people have the right to vote on this ourselves don’t you think?

UP to 75,000 yesterday took to the streets to protest at €4bn in proposed Budget cuts — but the only thing that had changed by last night was that the country was €70m deeper in debt.
And Taoiseach Brian Cowen and his Cabinet insisted the Government would press ahead with the cuts in the Budget.
Last night, Mr. Cowen’s spokesman said the march would not shrink the gaping hole in the public finances.
When the marches were over, Defense Minister Willie O’Dea told the Irish Independent that the Government still had to take the difficult decisions.
Everybody seems to have forgotten who it was that got us into this mess in the first place .Mr.Cowen and Mr.Lenihan and the their Green Lackeys are responsible and when and not if the fireworks get started the people will hopefully get justice
The corrupt bankers and the incompetence of the financial regulator’s office must be addressed as well
We must take back all the golden handshakes that were given out to these crooks and criminal precautions must be sought
All bankers that were involved must be stripped of their pensions and other assets and these given back to the people who have lost their jobs and pensions
These fraudsters should be on trial for treason and the loss financial independence of Ireland
If the Government is looking for money they should go to the Irish permanent they have 7,000,000,000:00 sloshing around to help out friends in distress!
Everybody else had to pay only not us, this gent was quite happy to see other people lose their jobs and their pensions, get their dole money cut or even get nothing at all but when it comes to his own member’s civil servants. Servants of the people what a laugh, well let’s just say he and his members are living on a different planet that the rest of us!
In previous postings I asked the question where were the Unions when this government were imposing penal taxes on the most vulnerable ,those that have no voice , the self employed ,now most of us unemployed ,our pensions gone ,paying into the PRSI and then being told that we were entitled to nothing, no help from the state.
The fact is the union bosses have also lost touch with the ordinary rank and file of the members
Their salaries are ten times the average industrial wage and a multiple of the ordinary member’s wage.
Yes these Union bosses could embarrass the King of expenses accounts Mr Jonny CASH
Ceann Comhairle O’Donoghue
Where on a daily bases we here people who are being paid huge salaries from the state tell us that we must pay more taxes and pay for the bail out of fat Bankers, corrupt politicians fiddling their bolted expenses and civil servants help themselves to whatever funds they want all taken from the public purse
For God sake , stop these vested interests stealing the families silver or is it too late ?
!!its Live Line (1)
Da –da Lid-dil-lis –da –da etc etc !!!
As I write this article I am listening to what in fast becoming a program I look forward to every day now
Anyway I will tape the show as best I can
You will hear this Union Boss telling reluctant electrical contractors they have to charge new higher hourly rates and the small contractors are saying that they have to live in the real world and charge what the current market will pay now
This gob-s*** spends the entire time making a complete buffoon of himself and reminds me of the loony 70s Trade unionist that went on strike for cups of tea in the English car factories then
He sounds as if he has his nose completely up is *** and is clinging on to his chairman Union Red Book Mantra
This proves to me that I was right about the trade unions here in Ireland; they are one and the same with the current government
They have lost their roots and are complexity out of touch with the ordinary working people
Time and Time again ordinary working electricians were ringing in to the show to say they did not want to charge these new charges because the current economic conditions do not support them! People just cannot pay these ridiculous hourly rates
Well none of these rates are as bad as the hourly rate I was quoted for my Renault car repair
Remember the 120Euro per Hour Bill Cullen wants to charge, He must want to buy a new Porsche and hopes that people like me will just cough up the bread
the point is there are a lot of people still out there that have not yet coped on that we are now in a depression and the good times of ripping off Joe public is over for good
So get real!!
